Why be a Striver?
Striving is an activity that is limited to the human species. Other animals aren’t able to understand that they can improve themselves through learning new subjects or exercising. For example, a lion doesn’t consider that it might be a bit too slow and then adopt a training regimen to improve its running speed. It gets faster through natural processes or it starves to death.
But humans do train other animals to be better than nature might allow. Consider a racehorse. A certain horse might possess the genetics for great speed, but without human trainers, that horse will not reach its full potential in the wild. In this case, a human has lent his own self-awareness to the horse and trained it to a level the horse could never consider.
That sort of self-awareness is pretty much a human thing. You know that you should improve. You might not want to admit your weaknesses even to yourself, but deep down inside, you know. The wonderful part of being human is that we can seek out information and use it to help us improve our lives.

So, where does the name Jammany Hall come from?
Really, it’s a play on Tammany Hall, the name of the old New York City political machine. Tammany Hall controlled new York City politics from the mid-1800s to the 1930s.
Tammany Hall was quite corrupt. Its famous leader, Boss Tweed, would eventually be overthrown and sent to prison for embezzlement of city funds and graft. Tweed and his cronies made sure that nothing happened in New York City without a payoff to Tammany Hall. Obviously Jammany Hall isn’t trying to turn you into another Boss Tweed!
However, Tammany Hall provided jobs and and a step-up to New York City residents who might not otherwise have had a chance to get out of the slums.
